an interest in the firms in Hoihow and Pakhoi from whom the
opium was bought, they also appear to have had a share in
the junks which were specielly chartered to bring the opium
from the mouth of the Loongmo on River to Pakhoi or Hoihow.
It is therefore impossible to calculate what the profits of
the several partners were finally. The ultimate profits
were probably large as the risks were spread over so many persons and fims, a less in connection with one branch of
the business would be fully made up by the success of
another. Most of the opium dealt in was the "Bamboo" style
so called from the piece of bamboo used to form the bottom
of the pat of spium, this kind of Turvan opium always fetches
a kigher price here then the "piller" style so called trom it being in lmpe resembling a Chinese pillow; but early in the year large amounts of Persian opium were bought through
Heibow, and passed through the Colony for ultimate sale in
Swatow, the natives of that district having a special liking
for Persian in preference to Chinese opium. The supplies of Persian seem to have ceased quite mddenly just about the time of the record seizure by the Police on the island. It is probable that the disturbed state of the coastal regions of China bad driven this epim to the Colony for temporary safety and its seizure cleared up all the available supplies
of Persian on the coast.
Methods of introduction. The spium was bought in the Yamchow district and escorted down the Loongmoon River by soldiers who were paid at a fired rate. Many of the friends of the firm appear to have been military officials, whose sid is indispensible to the spium trade at present in China, it only to afford protection. At the mouth of the river the opium was put into junks often chartered for the purpose and conveyed to Pakhoi or Hoihow.
